What the job usually involves.

The installer usually removes the wiper arms, cowl panel and moldings, cuts the old windshield out and trims the old urethane down to a thin, even layer. Bare or scratched metal on the frame (the pinch weld) is primed, new urethane adhesive is applied, the new glass is set in place, and any rain sensor, mirror mount or camera bracket is moved across or replaced. Many installers then refit the trim and check for leaks and wind noise.

On many newer vehicles a forward-facing camera behind the glass supports driver-assistance features. NHTSA explains, for example, that lane departure warning uses a camera to detect when the vehicle is veering out of its lane. A complete quote says whether that camera will be calibrated after the glass is replaced.

This page assumes the glass is being replaced. If the damage is a small chip or short crack, the alternative is a resin repair that keeps the original glass; it is a different job with its own quote, covered on the windshield chip repair page.

What a complete written quote should state.

• The glass part number and its features.
• Whether moldings, clips and sensor mounts are new or reused.
• Whether ADAS calibration is included, the method (static, dynamic or both), and whether it is done in-house or sublet.
• The adhesive used and the safe drive-away time.
• How rust or damage found on the frame under the old glass would be handled and billed.
• Labor, mobile service fees, disposal and tax.
• The written warranty on the glass, the installation and the calibration.

What changes the total.

The glass itself varies most from one vehicle to another: size, curvature, heated areas, acoustic layers, display areas and sensor brackets all change the part. Whether the glass is sourced from the vehicle maker or an equivalent supplier matters too.

Calibration, new trim, mobile service and the local labor rate also change it. Rust found on the pinch weld once the old glass is out can add work that no quote could list in advance. Insurance can change what you pay without changing the quote total.

Calibration and state glass rules.

Calibration re-aims the forward camera so driver-assistance features read the road correctly through the new glass. A California Senate Judiciary Committee analysis of SB 988, a bill heard on April 14, 2026, states that the ADAS must be properly calibrated when a windshield is replaced. That is a committee analysis of a proposed bill, not a law in force, and this guide has not confirmed whether the bill was enacted. In Kentucky only, the state's glass-coverage law defines glass replacement work to include calibrating or recalibrating ADAS when damaged glass is replaced.

The vehicle maker sets the method. A static calibration is done in the shop with printed targets placed at measured distances on a level floor; a dynamic calibration is done by driving on clearly marked roads with a scan tool connected while the camera relearns its aim. Some vehicles need both. Because static calibration needs floor space and targets, a mobile install may send the calibration to another shop as sublet work, so ask where and when it will happen.

Some states limit deductibles on glass. In Florida, the comprehensive deductible does not apply to windshield damage on policies with comprehensive coverage. Kentucky requires comprehensive coverage to pay for glass repair or replacement without regard to any deductible, and in South Carolina physical damage deductibles do not apply to automobile safety glass. Each of these rules applies only in its own state; do not assume a similar rule where you live, and check your own policy.

When a second opinion is worth it.

• The quote names no glass part number or leaves out features your current windshield has.
• Your vehicle has a camera behind the glass and the quote says nothing about calibration.
• Calibration is said to be done but no written result is offered.
• The glass is to be installed on site by a mobile installer, but the calibration method or location is not written.
• The warranty is verbal only.

A crack in the driver's line of sight can limit visibility, and driving before the adhesive's drive-away time can weaken the bond. A camera that is not calibrated may not support driver-assistance features as designed; if warnings behave unusually after glass work, contact the installer before relying on them.
